Constellation has committed to investing $1.6bn up to 2028 to bring the plant back into operation.

The decision to proceed with the restart was made after Constellation conducted a thorough survey of the site to assess the condition of essential infrastructure and equipment.

In a strategic move in September 2024, Constellation signed a 20-year power contract with Microsoft, which will support the restart efforts.

The Three Mile Island reactor, situated on an island in the Susquehanna River, will supply 835MW of power, which will contribute to offsetting the electricity consumption of Microsoft’s data centres.

Unit 1 of the plant, which Constellation is focused on reactivating, ceased operations in 2019 for economic reasons.

The company anticipates that Unit 1 will resume power production by 2028. However, this target is subject to overcoming several physical and regulatory challenges, including compliance with US and local regulations.

Additional investments are being channelled into refurbishing the reactor’s turbine, generator and cooling systems – all essential for the plant’s operational readiness.

In July 2024, Constellation Energy held discussions with the governor’s office and state legislators in Pennsylvania on securing funding for a potential restart of a unit at the Three Mile Island facility.

The action indicated that Constellation was advancing plans to reactivate a section of the nuclear facility in southern Pennsylvania, which had been in operation from 1974 until its closure in 2019.
